Although he spoke the catchphrase as the face of Reading Rainbow, PBS affiliate WNED is suing Levar Burton for attempting to gain from the brand. Legal documents were filed on Friday, August 4th (see docs here) in the New York Southern District Court by Western New York Public Broadcasting Association against Burton’s RRKidz.

One of the main issues is WNED alleges that Burton and RRKidz undermined their attempts to bring Reading Rainbow back by having meetings with Netflix to bring about a revival of their own.

“As evidenced by Mr. Burton’s conduct since he began ‘teasing’ the public about the return of Reading Rainbow years before his company acquired any rights to do so, Mr. Burton’s goal is to control and reap the benefits of Reading Rainbow’s substantial goodwill — goodwill that unquestionably belongs to WNED,” states the complaint.
