Recognizing that there is an issue in Hollywood with whitewashing Asians, Asian-Americans and most POC, Ed Skrein has decided to step down from the role of Major Ben Daimio in the upcoming Hellboy reboot.

In a tweet on his personal twitter account, Skrein explained his reasoning. Opening with an honest admission of not having known the character’s heritage, he addresses the lack of recognition for minorities, their stories and lack of their voices in the arts. He proceeds to call for a culturally appropriate casting and expresses his sadness for leaving the project but does so hoping to bring light to an ongoing issue in Hollywood.

Although Skrein has called for the role to be cast with the character’s heritage in mind, at this time there has been no announcement on who will be replacing him.

Skrein’s exit follows the backlash online over the whitewashing of his character, Major Ben Daimio, an Asian character in the comics.
