Lena Waithe to play P Ninny in ‘Dear White People’ Season 2

From behind the camera to recurring roles on multiple shows, Lena Waithe is making moves, mind you those of us who have been following the actors career knew she was going to change the game. Netflix was one of the early ones to take note. Picking up “Dear White People‘, which Waithe was a producer on, and bringing it to series, as well as her work on ‘Master of None‘.

Waithe made history recently as the first black woman to win an Emmy for Best writing for a comedy series (which she shared with Aziz Ansari for their work on ‘Master of None’ season 2 Thanksgiving episode), she was also the central focus of the episode that airs on Netflix.

The streaming giant would be smart to lock Waithe down with an exclusive deal like they did Shonda Rhimes and Mark Millar. Bringing her in to play P Ninny in season 2 of Dear White People and having won an Emmy as a writer for one of their shows. However they may be too late, Showtime picked up Waithe’s show ‘The Chi‘ which she co-produced with Common and it will premiere in 2018. ‘Dear White People’ Season 2 is expected in late April or early May.

[Lena Waithe] will recur in season 2 as P Ninny, a braggadocious MC who stars on a ridiculous Love & Hip Hop-like reality series called Trap-House Tricks.

Netflix signs deal with Shondaland

Netflix sent out a press release announcing they have penned a deal with Shonda Rhimes, which will see Shondaland making a home with the streaming service. Rhimes current shows at ABC will continue as is, with most already available on the streaming service in different markets across the globe.

“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” said Rhimes

What this may also touch on, is the rumour that Disney is interested in buying Netflix. With Netflix signing deals with Shondaland and Millarworld, an acquisition at this time would bolster Disney’s already impressive catalogue of content.
